day 21 – #31daysofgettingdressed weekly outfit recap

last wednesday on wear it wednesday i shared a little about how #31daysofgettingdressed has affected my heart. today i want to share a little about how it has affected my view of clothing and how i shop!

i first became aware of fair trade, ethical fashion and the issues that exist surrounding fashion around this time last year. i began following several different companies and individuals on instagram, like the root collective, the garment collective, project hazina and shelby introduced me to noonday collection.

a passion was light in my heart to help support these companies. it was a barrel roll of finding new companies that are fair trade and ethical and suddenly i don't want to shop at target and walmart anymore. i don't want to go to the mall to buy christmas gifts. i want my money to count for something. i want my money to support these amazing artisans that love what they do and aren't sitting on a billfold as big as my face (see below for size reference...).

i began thinking more about the pieces that i have in my closet and who made them when the garment collective shared about fashion revolution day. (april 24th) i had no idea before then, the conditions that people still work in to bring us the mass marketed clothing. please go here and read more about it. from then i knew that i wanted to do something about it.

i will be purchasing only from companies that i know are made in the states or are fair trade/ethical. it's tough, but i know it is going to be worth it. the quality will be better and it will be better economically. i will also be thrifting more. i became a thrifter wiz during my college days (as few as those were) but i loved it. i have been so happy with the pieces that i found at the thrift store here in town a couple of weeks ago:

being more ethically contentious has also made me consider more carefully what i purchase. in the long run it is not only going to benefit my family financially but it will also benefit another family and even the economy. no, i'm not saying that my purchases are going to make a big dent in the economy but my family making these changes can lead to other families making similar changes and from there more, and even our boys financial decisions as they grow up. we will hopefully leave a legacy of ethically minded children.

unfortunately not everything in my closet has been purchased ethically or locally but i'm working towards that. for now, i am working with what i have which in itself is ethical...
