I have not been disappointed by many books in my life. I am disappointed in It's Not Fair by Melanie Dale. I am not surprised. To be honest, I requested the book so that I might be challenged to write about a book that would challenge my review writing.
Melanie Dale has a very enjoyable and relate-able way of writing which makes it an easy read. Unfortunately I was very discouraged about the mix of truth and personal feeling woven throughout the book.
She shares about her life struggles in a way that you can connect to and gives her opinions and personal feelings about how to handle them. While I believe Ms. Dale has the right heart to help those that are struggling in the midst of life, I can't help but think that some of her personal opinions overshadowed the truth that she was attempting to share.
Would I recommend or buy this book for a friend that's going through a rough patch?
No. I would not.
I wouldn't want to confuse my friend in her time of struggle. The best encouragement is speaking truth and while there are truths in It's Not Fair, the truths are intertwined in personal feeling and self-righteous anger that dissolves the reach of the truths of embracing our situations and difficulties.
Had I read this book three or four years ago, I guarantee it would have confused me and made me more angry about my situation causing a rift in my relationship with Christ. While I know that may not be the case for everyone, I would not be the one to give the book and be the cause of that rift.
